Brighton and VBites (video), plus a little trip!
The final stop on our European excursion was in Brighton, England, a place we'd never been and a great chance to visit our good friend Jojo and her husband Nick! Despite the weather being a bit grim, we had a fabulous time visiting this seaside town that is insanely vegan friendly.
We started things off right with a big meet up at vegetarian restaurant
Terre a Terre with members of the PPK, which also included blogger Sal from Alien on Toast. (We missed you Kip!) The table started off with some delicious Wasabi Cashews, while we waited for our entrees. I opted for the "Smokey Soul in a Bowl", a Jamaican inspired corn cake filled and topped with coconut spinach, with a bean sauce. It was much spicier than I expected, but still delicious nonetheless. A few others ordered the Socca and found themselves disappointed when it was nothing but a glorified, overpriced falafel. That being said, there's plenty of vegan options here that are more inspirational than the socca. For dessert, it was pretty much required that I get the Rain Vodka Cherry Chocolate Churros! The crunchy cinnamon and sugar coated churros were delicious and while the vodka soaked cherries were a bit much for me, the pot of chocolate it also came with was a nice touch. I would certainly return to Terre a Terre.
The next day, we took a stroll in the rain and checked out Vegetarian Shoes, Montezuma's Chocolates, The Punker Bunker, and a few other shops, including another vegan friendly chocolate shop I've forgotten the name of. Along the way we ran across Shakeaway, a milkshake shop that does vegan shakes, so I decided to treat myself to one. I opted for a Fry's Orange Cream Bar blended in, which was pretty good, although I've noticed UK milkshakes to be much thinner than in the US, so the chunks just ended up in the bottom of the cup.
We also were sure to check out Infinity Foods, a grocery co-op, where I stocked up on all things delicious from Caramel Pudding to Candy Bars! It's scary how much food, I took home! Infinity has freshly baked vegan sweets, so I grabbed a cinnamon bun, as well as the most delicious scone I have ever had, filled with raisins. Oh man, I have never cared about scones until I had a bite of that flaky, moist, amazingness!
On a rainy afternoon, we took a bus out to Hove Lagoon to check out VBites, a cafe as well as a range of vegan food, owned by Heather Mills. Rather than describe in detail all of the nachos, burgers, and cupcakes we enjoyed, I made a little video to share our experience. Check it out! (The music is "Just What I Need" by Nikki and the Corvettes.)
I'm headed to New York City this week! Not only will I be attending the Veggie Prom and the Veggie Pride Parade, but I'll be doing a big food photo shoot for The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life, shot by none other than Hannah Kaminsky of My Sweet Vegan. Obviously, I'm excited and I'll bring you all of the details when I return, including new restaurants that have opened! If you're going to be at any of these events, get in touch!!
Vegetarian Times, an Upcoming Book, Sweet Treats via Mail, & Europe!
What a whirlwind life has been lately & this post will likely confirm that! Some of you have noticed I was featured in the March issue of Vegetarian Times, for the "Ask A Chef" column! The piece takes my Sugar Beat Sweets skills & uses them to answer questions about making the perfect vegan frosting for cakes, cupcakes, and other goodies. Check it out if you get a chance! The photo was taken by my friend Kelly Peloza from Seitan Beats Your Meat & the upcoming book, The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur!
So, speaking of books.. I'm in the process of writing a book! It's currently titled, "The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life" & will be published by Skyhorse Publishing. The book is not just for vegan girls, but anyone who's interested in a cruelty free lifestyle, & contains recipes & tips for DIY living. In addition to the basic who-what-where-when-why of veganism, it also gives out crucial tips like what to feed non-vegans, the best vegan beauty products, travel tips, plus has illustrations by Michelle from My Zoetrope, & an assortment of recipes & crafty projects from a Who's Who of awesome vegan ladies! Needless to say, I'm very excited!
I need a few recipes testers! I've been crafting up recipes like crazy & I need a few people to test them out for me. Testers must be willing to make at least half of the recipes between now & June, although the majority of them are available for testing now. Recipes are not the focus of the book, so it's a fairly small amount to test. The book is for people of all skill levels in the kitchen, so there's everything from simple vegetable preparations to full dinner feasts. For your time, you'll receive a copy of the book & my undying affection! If interested, please email me at melisser AT theurbanhousewife.com. I'm all set, thanks!
My mailbox has been full of sweet treats recently. First, a surprise came from VeggieGirl a few weeks ago in the form of Tortüz, a confection by Futters Nut Butters! I love all things caramel, so these sweet and delicious caramel & dark chocolate covered pecans went fast in my house! Futter's has quite a selection of vegan goodies, I want to check out some of their spreads & brittle next.
We all know I love donuts, from videos to blog posts to recipes, I write about donuts whenever possible, so when Larsen Bakery in Racine, WI offered to send me donuts to try, how could I say no?! Little did I know I was in for a major treat that not only included 18 donuts in 3 varieties with 2 types of frosting, but also 2 of their Apple Kringles!
Thank goodness I had friends in town from Canada to share with & a potluck to attend, that's a lot of pastries!
We started with the donuts, which were Regular ring donuts, Bavarian Creme filled, & Raspberry Jelly filled with the option of vanilla or chocolate frosting provided in containers. After refreshing them in the oven for a few minutes, then spreading the frosting on, we were all transported back to our favorite childhood donut shops! While the oven refreshing is essential, the result is downright delicious & they're most certainly on my Top 5 Vegan Donuts list! In the future, I would likely refresh them, then spread the frosting on & pop them back in the oven for a few seconds to make it nice & melty, as the frosting seemed a bit thick to me. Seriously though, they're tasty, easily accessible on VeganEssentials, reasonably priced, & there's even a sampler pack available!
Next up, we tried the Kringle, a flaky, filled Danish pastry, that's shaped in a ring. Once again, we refreshed it in the oven & it was great! These basically taste like a, individual danish with flaky layers, but it's filled with flavor instead, & has a nice white glaze on top. I opted for the Apple flavor, which I enjoyed, but there's also Cherry, Raspberry, Pecan, & Almond available from VeganEssentials. Being a baker myself, I was skeptical to try these pastries, but I'm happy to say, they passed my test & I wouldn't turn them down if given the chance to eat them again!
My next adventure is coming up at the end of this month, as we're off to Europe! This time I'll be checking out Edinburgh, Vienna, London, & Brighton. Yes, 2 new places, & 2 familiar places that are favorite cities of mine. I'll be seeing bands play, meeting up with lots of lovely friends, including my German BFF Marijke, browsing markets, & of course, eating! I have a few group meet-ups planned, so please get in touch if you'd like to join us or want to make dining or activity suggestions!
That's all the news that's fit to print! Look out for next week, when I'll have a tasty giveaway!
A Tale of Two Weekends in Los Angeles; part 2!
As I mentioned last week, I recently found myself in Southern California twice in a 2 week span. While it's bit much for a gal who'd rather walk 5 miles than get in a car, I was happy to take advantage of all the amazing food Los Angeles and beyond has to offer. After a busy weekend that included the Sugar Beat Sweets sponsored Vegan Valentines Dance & another successful Vegan Bake Sale, Ryan & I set out on our adventure. We always take the scenic route 101, which has far better views, but also we can stop in our former home San Luis Obispo, see our good friend Josh, pick up some vegan chocolates, & of course, eat! While I've mentioned the fabulous Tempeh Tacos at Shine Cafe in Morro Bay, another place we often go is Big Sky Cafe in downtown SLO. While the vegan options at Big Sky have dwindled in recent years,
my heart still belongs to the Chilled Sesame Ginger Noodles in all its spinach covered glory! I recommend you stop there for a meal, when you're in the area.
We arrived in Southern California on Valentine's Day, met up with Erika from Purrfect Pineapples (NSFW?!) & our friend Joe, then headed over to Follow Your Heart. While they seemed to be especially on hippie time that day, we still enjoyed our meal. I started off with an Orange Shake, my favorite diner treat, then moved on to a half order of thick, fluffy french toast with pecans & lots of maple syrup. They ran out of home fries, so I went for a bean hash which was just alright in my opinion.
FYH is a great place to stop when you're in the Valley, the food is pretty solid, plus they have a market where you can pick up veg staples, like a million types of non-dairy ice cream, or in my case chapstick, cough drops, & a giant bottle of Dr. Bronners! Aren't I a barrel of fun?!
On the night of Valentine's Day, we headed to a benefit for Compassion Over Killing, an excellent animal rights organization. (Go check out their Dunkin' Donuts campaign & make your own vegan donut!) With promises of food from local vegan joints like Cinnamon & the proceeds going to a great group, Erika, Adriana from Anarchy in the Garden, & I couldn't help but attend to support it! While the music certainly wasn't our taste, the assortment of cupcakes from The Fakery Bakery & Cafe Flore were!
We also noshed on assorted savories like Tofu & Nopales, mini Tofurky sandwiches, & vegan quiche.
After we left the party, we decided to grab a bite to eat at my new favorite spot, The Veggie Grill. After my tasty meal the weekend before, I wanted Ryan to experience it for himself! We decided to share the All American Stack, a monster burger with the works, including onion rings stacked inside & the Chinese Chickin' Salad. Once again, I was impressed! Not only did I eat salad, but I ate mock meat, & actually enjoyed it! The blackened chickin' is pretty amazing & almost scares me to a point where I don't want to eat it.
Don't worry, I ate it! Hey Veggie Grill, can you please open in San Francisco next?
The next morning, I knew I had a day of tattooing with Hannah Aitchison ahead of me, so I filled up at a favorite spot, M Cafe. Ryan & I started with a tender, flaky Almond Croissant that we both loved! As my main, I opted for the Carolina-Style Barbequed Sandwich, a big, messy creation piled high with coleslaw
& seitan in BBQ sauce on a wheat bun, with a side of broccolini. It certainly was filling & delicious! For dessert, we shared the Banana Millefeuille, which has flaky layers of pastry with banana slices, cream filling, and sliced almonds. I had heard rave reviews about this, but thought it was just pretty good, possibly because the croissant was so lovely!
After a long session of tattooing, my appetite was raring to go, so I headed to a great spot for a big appetite, Vinh Loi Tofu. We had to wait a bit for a table, but it proved to be well worth it. The Udon Stir Fry dish with their freshly made tofu & vegetables was a perfect conclusion to my LA adventures! It actually reminded me a bit of Pad Thai, which I didn't mind at all.
Ryan enjoyed his (creepy) Ham Rolls & Banh Mi too! I was surprised when the owner Kevin remembered us from the time we visited with QuarryGirl & Ms. To Live & Eat in LA, especially when he reminded us it was 1 year earlier on Valentines Day! I don't know if he has veganism to thank for his incredible memory, but I was suitably impressed!
Well, that should conclude my Southern California travel for some time. Of course, I'm always ready for my next adventure, so stay tuned for next week when I'll make a big announcement & reveal my next destinations!
A Tale of Two Weekends in Los Angeles; part 1!
Two weekends, two road trips to Los Angeles. What the heck was I thinking?! Well, on the 1st weekend I had tickets to see Pee-Wee Herman Live! How cool is that?! I couldn't pass up the chance to see one of my childhood heroes, so I hopped in the car with friends Jen & Nate, & we made our way to Southern California. The show was amazing and the set took me back to my Saturday mornings spent in front of the television, screaming at the secret word! There's rumors of Broadway & a stint in San Francisco, even a new movie. My fingers are crossed!
The night we arrived, I headed to Shojin an organic, vegan, Japanese restaurant to meet with friends Adriana from Anarchy in the Garden, Allison from Could It Be Seitan?, & my long time friend Natalie, aka VeganKitten. We all poured over the extensive menu, finding it difficult to make decisions with everything available to us. After reading & re-reading the menu, I opted for the Orange Kale Salad & the Yuzu Ponzu Seitan. As usual, the housemade seitan was tender & delicious with a nice zing from citrus. The kale salad was a bit too raw for my taste, but the balsamic dressing & oranges paired nicely with the kale.
After dinner, Adriana, Hector & I walked over to the newly opened Los Angeles location of Babycakes NYC, dodging the rats running rampant in downtown LA. While Babycakes NYC hasn't been my favorite in the past, I decided to give it another try, & I'm glad I did! While the carrot cupcake still didn't knock my socks off, the gluten free chocolate chip cookie sandwich, filled with a TON of their delicious coconut oil frosting, was great! You most certainly won't miss the gluten in this sweet treat, I highly recommend it!
The next day, we headed out to my favorite brunch spot, Madeleine Bistro, once again meeting up with friends. The ladies of QuarryGirl, Purrfect Pineapples (sexy alert!), Sick of Lettuce, Veggywood, VeganKitten, & even some non-blogging friends were in attendance. We may have ordered the entire menu between us, but what we certainly ordered the most of was their delicious donuts & beignets. Holy fried dough, I love them! I also finally tried their famous Beet Tartare, which was everything people have said it is.
For my entree, I had the Lemon Rosemary Seitan with Sourdough Stuffing & the most delicious gravy ever. So delicious, I had to order a side of mashed potatoes, to eat with the amazing gravy. For dessert, I had the vegan defying Chocolate Souffle! How they do it, I do not know, but it is vegan & a souffle. Did I mention the owners of Madeleine Bistro are awesome as well? They're vegan, super friendly, & know how to make damn good food! Thank you Madeleine Bistro, now open up in San Francisco already!
After brunch, we hiked around Mulholland Drive & Runyon Canyon Park, visited my friend Jessica in her house built by Bela Lugosi, then headed to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to search for the newly opened Carvel ice cream. Yes, the people who brought you Cookie Puss have a location on Rodeo Drive, AND it has vegan soft serve. I had a vanilla soft serve with cookie crunch, but unfortunately, it didn't impress me like I had hoped. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. They CAN do a vegan Cookie Puss though, so I may have to take them up on that offer some day, maybe for St. Patrick's Day. Cookie O'Puss, anyone?
After a night of laughs with Pee-Wee Herman, including a meet & greet with the entire cast, we were ready for another bite to eat. We raced to The Veggie Grill on Sunset Blvd., slipping in 15 minutes before they closed. While things started roughly with a less-than-cheery cashier, the delicious food lifted our spirits! The Chickin' Caesar salad is HUGE & piled high with corn salsa and croutons, covered in a creamy dressing. I opted for the Blackened Tempeh version & it was fabulous. After our little snag with the cashier, the rest of the staff was quick to remedy the situation & we found ourselves with free slices of Carrot Cake. Never one to turn down dessert, I devoured the nicely spiced cake covered in a tangy cream cheese frosting. My only wish would be more carrots in the cake, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
On our way out of town, we had time for one last stop, this time at the Meet Market, formerly known as Flore Cafe, home of the all you can eat brunch on weekends. They've recently changed things up & now offer sandwiches and salads in addition to weekend brunch, cupcakes from Vegan Bake Sale, as well as a small section of groceries like the delicious jelly beans & peanut butter covered pretzels we took for the car ride home.
While I was tempted by many of the options, I went with a newly added item, The Reuben. We all know I love the Radical Reuben from the Chicago Diner, so I typically shy away from potentially inferior sandwiches, but at the low price of $4.95, I had to give it a try. It's GOOD! While not quite as radical as my Chicago favorite, it hit the spot with all the standard Reuben goods like sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, & marinated wheat meat, plus their addition of balsamic beets. I could take or leave the beets, but I would take this sandwich again!
Stay tuned for next week when I take yet another trip to the land of sun and palm trees.. and botox.
New York City; food, friends, & fun! Part 2.
The 2nd half of my New York City trip was much like the 1st half; delicious food & meeting up with friends! NYC has quite the vegan community & it was great to get to see people who are a part of it! On a sunny, but brisk Saturday morning I headed out to Brooklyn to meet friends Terry, Jason, & Deb for brunch at the mostly vegan spot Boneshakers.
We quickly found out that brunch is Sundays only, but luckily there were plenty of great "knuckle sandwiches", salads, & house-made baked goods available! We started out with a coffee cake muffin with sticky raisins & pecans that seemed a bit wholesome, but was pretty good. Next, I opted for the Rebel Cruiser sandwich, which was an awesome giant kaiser roll filled with BBQ seitan & coleslaw. While it wasn't french toast, it certainly hit the spot! Next, we shared a tasty slice of S'mores Cheesecake that was rich & chocolatey, with melted marshmallows on top! yum.
Sunday, was another day for friends & so I met for brunch with my good friend and former roommate Eliana, and Evan, at Peacefood Cafe. Trekking to the Upper West Side was a bit of a trip with the Sunday train schedule, but it turned out to be worthwhile. We all started by sharing a giant doughy Cinnamon Roll covered in frosting, it wasn't gooey inside, more bready, but still quite nice. I had read Peacefood's menu in advance & found myself fixated on the Roasted Japanese Pumpkin Sandwich.
Japanese pumpkin, caramelized onions, walnuts, vegan goat cheese, and seasonal greens on spelt rye bread; it ended up being a bit too healthy tasting for me with the dry whole grain bread, although it still was good. Evan opted for the Mediterranean Oven Dried Seasonal Vegetable Panini with cashew cheese & basil spinach pesto, & without a doubt, I would get that next time! For dessert, I ordered the Strawberry Shortcake which was a hearty, yet fluffy biscuit filled with whipped cream & strawberries. We also had a Cheesecake that was not to our liking, but the owner graciously replaced it with a very delicious raw Key Lime Pie that was tangy, with a nutty crust. Peacefood Cafe is a beautiful place for seasonal food that will make your belly happy, check it out!
On Monday, I met Alyssa for a meal at Sacred Chow, which I almost walked right past, but luckily noticed before I got too far down Sullivan Street. I was thrilled to find out they were serving brunch on a weekday, so I went all out & ordered the Banana Bread French Toast. Oh. my. WORD. A giant slab of grilled banana pound cake, in a pool of blueberry sauce, topped in fresh fruit hit the table, & my jaw dropped! I ate every single morsel of this dish & loved every minute of it. Seriously, I think about it once in awhile & decided I HAVE to recreate the recipe! Alyssa opted for Mama's Soy Meatball Hero, which she also enjoyed! Sacred Chow, I will be back!
A relatively new spot on the NYC vegan scene is Cocoa V, a chocolate & wine cafe in Chelsea. I spent some time in the chocolate shop & ended up with a fair amount of the house-made, fair trade, organic confections, some of which were a gift for Hannah's birthday. I tried a roasted edamame lime cayenne salt cluster, the banana chip honey, vanilla caramel, & orange passionfruit caramel. While for Hannah I bought, a coffee caramel, almond butter bonbon, pecan praline, & also the orange passionfruit caramel. The chocolate here is very dark, a bit too dark for me, but the orange passionfruit caramel was phenomenal & the sweet center paired perfectly with the dark chocolate. They also bake goodies in house, so I also took away a Snickerdoodle & a Coffee Cake square that were quite good. I'd like to return & try the fondue, which looked incredible, especially with the Dandies Marshmallows they serve up. Cocoa V is not inexpensive, so be prepared to drop quite a bit of cash, even on chocolates. This is a great spot for a special occasions though!
Later that night, I met up with the lovely Michelle from MyZoetrope at Lan Cafe. Despite calling the day before & them assuring me they'd be open.. they weren't. So, we hopped in a cab & headed uptown to Candle Cafe. I just had to start with my favorite dish, the citrus herb marinated Seitan Chimichurri! Oh my, I could eat these daily. Next, I went gluten crazy & got the Porcini Crusted Seitan, with was atop a bed of mashed potatoes & gravy, greens, & green beans. I believe I've had the same dish at Candle 79 & as always, it was excellent. We finished with some Tangerine sorbet, but unfortunately, it tasted strange, so we opted not to finish it & instead thought about our delicious dinners.
My last day in New York City came too soon & I couldn't go without meeting up with more friends! Ms. Hannah Kaminsky herself turned 21 & was kind enough to celebrate by joining myself, Eliana, & Nicole from Another One Bites the Crust for lunch at The Organic Grill! While Hannah & Nicole opted for wraps, & Eliana went with a special of the day, I like to pick my own dishes, so I made a sampler for myself with an order or grilled seitan, mashed sweet potatoes, steamed kale, & jalapeno cornbread. The cornbread was too dry for my taste, but everything else was nice & we all loved the sweet potato mash! Like last time, I think The Organic Grill is a solid option in NYC.

Of course, one day left means one last trip to Lula's Sweet Apothecary, with Alyssa & Evan! Yes, I am a huge fan of Lula's! I was lucky enough to get to try all the freshly made flavors, which seemed to be perfectly tailored to my tastes. I opted for a sundae with Cracker Jack & Chocolate Toffee Crunch ice cream, marshmallow topping, whipped cream, & a cherry. Have I mentioned I love Toffee? I really, really do. I can't think of a better final sundae for my trip!
For dinner, I headed to Pala Pizza on the Lower East Side, again with the awesome Terry, Jason, & Deb! I had been hearing Pala has a good sized vegan menu, as well as many gluten free options, & a dedicated fryer, it turns out it's true! We ordered 3 types of pizza off the menu; a potato zucchini pizza, a field roast sausage & cherry tomato pizza, & a mushroom parsley, all which had generous amounts of Daiya cheese on them. While the crust was nice, I wasn't bowled over by the pizza in general. Surprisingly, I liked the one with Field Roast & cherry tomatoes best, which is not what I would typically order. I did really like that they had dried oregano on the table, that you could pluck from & sprinkle on to your food. The service was also lacking, especially when we were asked if we could leave our table so others could be seated right after we had just finished paying the check. I would give Pala another shot, it's just not high on my "must eat" list.

For my final NYC experience, I had to hit up Atlas Cafe, after all it was Vegan Treats delivery day! While Deb took some doughnuts for the road, Jason & I crammed in to the tiny cafe & chatted over a giant Cinnamon Roll & a Boston Cream Doughnut. While I like my cinnamon rolls fluffier, the gooey frosting on top was pretty tasty. Also, I'm spoiled when it come to doughnuts, so I liked the Boston Cream, but it didn't blow me away. That being said, I still think Tuesday Atlas trips are a must when visiting NYC!
Apparently, I enjoyed NYC so much, I never wanted to leave. The next day, I missed my flight! Luckily, I was able to get on standby & make it home a few hours later than scheduled. Can you blame me for wanting to stay?! I love New York City!
